Elmira College: Mark Twain Study

  • Restoration
  • Elmira College, Elmira, NY
  • Budget:
    $65,000

Estimated Completion: Fall 2026

Johnson-Schmidt Architect is working with Quarry Farm and Elmira College for the interior and exterior restoration of the historic Mark Twain Study on the Elmira College campus. The small octagonal study, where Samuel Clemens wrote many of his best-known works, is one of the region’s most significant literary landmarks and requires a careful preservation approach that protects both its historic fabric and its long-term public interpretation.

The project includes interior finish investigation and restoration, with a focus on the study’s natural wood surfaces. A shellac coating study was completed to evaluate appropriate treatment methods that allow the historic wood to remain exposed, protected, and visually compatible with the character of the space. Exterior work includes sensitive refinishing of the building envelope, including paint stripping and surface preparation methods selected in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Through construction observation, coordination, and preservation oversight, our role supports Quarry Farm and Elmira College in ensuring that the work is completed with the level of care required for such an important historic structure. The restoration will help preserve the study’s distinctive character while maintaining its role as a treasured educational and cultural resource.
