The Corning Courthouse is an early twentieth-century civic building that reflects the lasting influence of Greek Revival design in public architecture. Through the use of historic tax credits, the building has been sensitively adapted into seven boutique market-rate apartments, balancing new residential use, accessibility, and long-term preservation.

Johnson-Schmidt Architect’s rehabilitation approach focused on retaining and highlighting the courthouse’s historic civic character while carefully integrating the requirements of contemporary housing. The project included the addition of a new ADA ramp to improve access, along with interior planning that preserved significant existing features such as plaster ceilings, crown molding, historic wood doors, terrazzo flooring, and original lighting fixtures, including brass chandeliers.

Nonhistoric elements from later renovations that detracted from the building’s character were removed and replaced with more compatible interventions. The completed rehabilitation supports a new use for the building while maintaining the architectural details and public identity that define the historic courthouse.
