Estimated Completion: TBD
Located along Elmira’s emerging arts district within the Civic Historic District, the Arnot Carriage House is a distinctive example of the scale, craftsmanship, and architectural variety that defined the city in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The project, currently in development, will rehabilitate the historic structure through a combination of historic tax credits and grant funding, preserving its architectural character while reimagining the building as a new downtown destination.
The proposed rehabilitation will introduce new commercial space and a hotel lobby on the first floor, with twelve hotel rooms located on the second and third floors. The project also reclaims the building’s previously non-habitable attic, transforming its dramatic open truss volume into usable guest rooms while retaining the character of the historic roof structure. A new elevator addition on the north façade will provide accessible circulation, and a new conservatory/enclosed patio to the east will create a distinctive gathering space that connects the building’s historic fabric with a new hospitality experience.
Together, these improvements will return the Arnot Carriage House to active use, support the continued growth of Elmira’s arts and cultural district, and help establish the building as a unique destination within downtown Elmira.
