Fisher Gymnasium is an Adirondack-style historic resource on the Silver Bay YMCA campus, contributing to the character and legacy of this significant historic setting. While the building retained its architectural integrity, its use was limited to warmer months because the existing envelope lacked insulation and could not be effectively heated during the winter.
Following a detailed conditions assessment, Johnson-Schmidt Architect developed a preservation-sensitive scope to improve the building’s seasonal performance while protecting its historic character. The work included evaluation of a new interior rain-screen wall assembly, insulation strategy, window coordination, and heating approach to support year-round use.
JSA worked with façade specialists to study multiple wall assembly options, balancing thermal performance, moisture management, constructability, reversibility, and visual impact. The selected approach allowed the building to become more functional and resilient without compromising the appearance of its historic materials and character-defining features.
The project was reviewed and approved by the National Park Service, reflecting a careful preservation strategy that supports both the long-term stewardship and continued active use of Fisher Gymnasium.
