Estimated Completion: Spring 2027
Johnson-Schmidt Architect is working with W.H. Lane, the project developer and contractor, on the historic tax credit rehabilitation of the former Johnson City High School complex. The project converts the long-vacant landmark into 54 residential units while preserving its historic character. Work includes new market-rate apartments, accessibility improvements, life-safety upgrades, energy-efficient building systems, new fire protection, and code-compliant egress, all carefully integrated with the building’s historic corridors, stairways, masonry, window openings, and interior features.
The project also includes rehabilitation of the 10k sqft former gymnasium annex for BOCES Adult Education use. This scope preserves the large-volume gym space, historic wood wall panels, and significant window openings while supporting new program, accessibility, fire alarm, and life-safety needs.
Together, the school and gym rehabilitation return an important community landmark to active use while balancing preservation, adaptive reuse, and long-term community benefit.
