Code Work
Code for historic and existing buildings differs from
that for new construction. Elise Johnson-Schmidt was
one of a select group of architects hired by the
Preservation League of New York State to provide case
studies for the state’s use in redeveloping its
building code for existing projects. The New York
State Building Code and the International Building
Code have been developed simultaneously to enhance the
ability to revitalize existing and historic
structures. J-S&A is skilled both at interpreting and
applying existing building codes for the purpose of
revitalizing historic structures while maintaining the
safety of the users and inhabitants.
