John W. Jones Museum - Institutional Grants and
Preservation Planning
Fugitive slave John Jones, a “stationmaster” for the
Underground Railroad, helped more than 800
individuals find their way to freedom. In 1997, a
local newspaper revealed that Jones’s Elmira, New
York home was to be condemned. Local citizens
rallied and formed a grassroots effort to save the
house and turn it into a museum that would tell the
stories of John Jones and the Underground Railroad
in Elmira. Johnson-Schmidt and Associates undertook
not only the restoration planning process, but also
worked closely with the Board of Trustees to write
two successful grant applications. The resulting
funding from the Environmental Protection Fund and
Heritage New York, along with other public funding
and private donations, enabled the organization to
undertake the extensive restoration project. Learn
