Elmira Corning Airport Passenger Lounge and
Restaurant Renovation

The Elmira-Corning Regional Airport Terminal,
originally designed and built in 1958-60, underwent
significant expansion in 1988-90. In 2004, J-S&A was
commissioned to completely redesign and rebuild the
airport restaurant and adjacent passenger lounge.
New features include a brushed metal countertop that
echoes the shape and detailing of an airplane wing,
and floor lighting that harkens to runway lights.
The theme is further enhanced by exhibits on loan
from the region’s three national museums of flight.
A glass case serves as both a partition and an
interest area, housing a wooden aircraft wing
(without fabric skin), on loan from the nearby Glenn
Curtiss Museum of Early Flight. Overhead, a
half-scale model of a glider is suspended, on loan
from the National Soaring Museum, as well as an
aircraft engine from the Wings of Eagles Discovery
Center (formerly the National Warplane Museum). The
restaurant can efficiently serve more than 350
people at
once, which means that it can serve as a destination
for banquets and meetings, as well as serving
passengers. |
